Scented Sachets, also known as Scent pouches or wardrobe sachets, are small bags of dried lavender which you place around your home to make your clothes smell nice. They’re so easy to make at home and doing so allows you to customise the scent to your tastes. They’re even quite cheap if you harvest and dry the lavender at home and buy the materials in bulk.

1. Making the sachets

This is super simple to do at home. Simply take a breathable fabric like cotton and cut a circle into it. I’d recommend doing this with fabric scissors to avoid fraying. Then, draw a smaller circle an inch into the fabric.

Using this line as a template, sew through the fabric with large gaps in between each pass. Then, simply tighten the thread to form a circular pouch. Just like that, you can make as many sachets as you need. As a general size guide, for small drawer sachets I would recommend the largest circle being 7 inches. For larger, decorative sachets I would make the largest circle 11 inches.

For added decoration, you can embroider the sachets or sew in patterns whilst it’s laid flat before tying it up. This gives you more freedom to design, but be sure to test the designs to make sure that you can still close the sachet easily.

If this is something that you aren’t interested in, you can buy some sachets here. The only thing I will say is that these sachets are made of a thinner material so may be less suitable for hanging around the home. With cotton sachets, you can customise the pattern used to make them into cute decorations.

2. Adding the Lavender Buds

For these scented sachets, the best thing to use is dried lavender buds as they have a strong scent and last quite a long time. You can buy dried lavender or you can dry it at home if you have a lavender plant. Place the lavender buds into the sachets, you can add some essential oils to strengthen the scent. After that, simply close the sachets and put them where you need.

How to dry lavender

Lavender is super easy to dry using the hanging method, it simply takes a few weeks to do so. Simply cut the stems around 5 inches from the buds until you have a handful. Then, tie the lavender upside down and hang it in a dark, dry place. Leave this for 2 weeks to fully dry before lightly pulling the buds from the stems.

Bunches of lavender hung upside down to dry.

This is how your lavender should be positioned for drying. However, I would recommend only drying what you need to for your sachets, with a bit of excess in case you run out. I would say that a singular bunch produces enough lavender buds for 2 large sachets and 4 small sachets.

Another drying method

Another method would be to encase the lavender in silica gel. Simply place the silica gel into a shallow container and lay the lavender inside. Then, cover the lavender with more silica gel and leave it for 2-3 days. The lavender should be dry by that point but if not then simply leave it there for another day until the lavender is dry and stiff.

How to use the Sachets

These scented sachets can be used basically everywhere around the home. They can be placed in your drawers or wardrobe to keep your clothes smelling fresh. These can also be placed on your coat rack to keep your coats, and your hallway, smelling nice. These are perfect for giving your home a fresh, floral scent naturally, which is great if you’re sensitive to smells or artificial ingredients.

These can also be placed under your pillow during the day, and taken out at night. The lavender scent is a calming scent which can help you fall asleep at night.

Reusable Sachets

The perfect thing about these scented sachets is, because they’re reopenable, you can simply replace the contents whenever the smell stats to fade. Luckily, these do last an extraordinarily long time. With no changes, these pouches can last around 8-9 months. However, you can add droplets of essential oil to reintroduce the scent to the pouches, making them last much longer. I only really need to replace the lavender every 2 and a half years or so making them so practical for making at home.

The lavender lasting so long is another reason I would recommend drying your on lavender at home. You can use bought lavender for the first sachets and plant a lavender bush at the same time, by the time the lavender needs replacing you will have a full bush to gather from. Not only will it save you a small amount of money, it also provides a lovely decoration to your garden.

Another brilliant thing is that you can start to experiment with other flowers once you’ve made these the first time. Other flora you can use includes flowers like rose and jasmine, which can dry using the same method

I hope you try to make these lavender scented sachets at home. If you do, let me know how it goes! Thanks for reading
