1. Flower Pressed Candles
Now, the soft glow of candle light is paramount to a soft and spooky Halloween night. These can decorate your front door steps, your bedside table, or your dining room table for the perfect low lighting. However, to make this decoration a bit more cosy you could use a candle with pressed or dried flowers around the sides. This would bring back in the nature-y feel to your home whilst still keeping it spooky.
2. Dried Lavender Bunches
Whilst Summer and Spring enjoy luscious and vibrant bouquets, autumn is the absolute best time for dried flower bunches. These bring a soft, rustic element into your home whilst also providing a soft floral scent. Simply hang these stems from a wall or rafter and enjoy the soft scents and colours of the flowers. Alternatively, if you don’t want or have space for the whole bunches you can simply use the dried lavender bids and place them into a small pot. For this, I’d recommend French Lavender as it keeps the most vibrant scent and colour compare to other varieties.
For Halloween, these bunches can give a witchy, rustic vibe to your home. Maybe you could pair these with the candles for the ultimate witchy vibe.
3. Lace Spider Webs
If you want to have some outdoorsy decorations but don’t want to go too spooky, then lace can be a brilliant substitute which last throughout October. You can drape it like garland across the front of your house and add fake spiders if you want an added spooky vibe. Yuo can also change the aesthetic depending on the colour of the lace. White lace replicates spider webs but black lace can be reminiscent of a witches hut. You can also match these to your indoor decorations by using a lace table cloth in your dining room. Either way, lace is a perfect for a more cute Halloween decoration.
4. Jack-o-lanterns
Now, Jack-o-lanterns are certainly not a unique or fancy Halloween decoration but by decorating them a bit differently they can be! You can carve your pumpkins normally then take a square of cheesecloth or an old pillowcase and drape it over the pumpkin. Then, when they’re lit at night it will look like the jack-o-lantern is pretending to be a ghost. These simple little ideas are just subtle ways to make your Halloween decorations a bit more different this year.
If you’re less worried about carving them, plain pumpkins can be a cute, traditional autumn decoration which introduces the warm colours to your home without the faces or spookiness.
5. Mummied Plant Pots
If you have some Potted Plants in front of your house and want to include them in the fun then an easy trick is to turn them into mummies! Using that cheesecloth mentioned earlier. Tear or cut rough strips from the square and wrap it around the pots. You can use a little bit of tape or glue to secure the ends to the pot, to stop it from falling. Wrap it tightly yet messily around the pots to mimic a mummy coming unravelled
To really sell the illusion, leave a small gap near the top and draw on two black eyes with washable marker. You can then easily wash this away after Halloween. This is such a cute and unique Halloween decoration which can quickly make a porch or doorstep feel cutesy and spooky!
6. Fruit Crate Tables
This idea can be used either outside or in depending on your needs. If you want a more rustic and autumnal feeling to your Halloween decorations then bare fruit crates can be perfect. These also give your decorations some height, making your display all the more impressive! These can easily be found at farmer markers at closing, but if no one is selling then you can always grab one online. Even better, these crates are reusable all throughout the year for storage or decoration so it will be more worth your money than other decorations like pumpkins.
7. Autumn Wreaths for Halloween Decorations
Now these are becoming quite common, but I often see them made with little to no authentic flora. So instead, try to grab a wreath incorporating all of autumns flowers like sunflowers, baby’s breath, and strawflower. This will give a cute, warm atmosphere to your porch throughout autumn, and fits perfectly into the Halloween celebrations. Also, these wreaths may be cheaper than Christmas wreaths due to the lower demand.
8. Flowering Cauldron
A perfect way to include florals into your decoration is by dressing one of your pots as a cauldron. You can do this by using a black, round pot like this. Due to its size, you will need to put a decently large plant in there, and I recommend a bright or vibrant plant to add to the magical element of this decoration, like a colourful lily. Then, you can loosely lay some of the previously mentioned cheesecloth around the top of the soil and lightly over the sides to give the illusion of bubbles. For added affect you could add some fairy lights around the plant to make it glow on Halloween night.
9. Bats in the Birdbath!
If you have a bird bath in your garden, this easy tip can add a little bit of spookiness. Simply buy a fake bat and glue it to the rim of the bird bath. It is a cute little detail and may even make someone double take when they first see it!
10. Stained Glass Lanterns as Halloween Decorations
Another easy tip for spooky lighting is to swap out your normal lanterns with stained glass. You can get these in the form of vases or lanterns and place them throughout your home and porch. Simply fill these with candles, fairy lights or tea lights to add a fun glow to your decorations. These are brilliant for adding unique lights to your display and creating a spooky atmosphere by dimming the light slightly.
11. Poison Mushrooms
Mushrooms have been a very popular decoration in recent years, which is useful for Halloween since it already gives off a spooky forest aesthetic. However, to really up the spooky vibe you can turn your mushroom decorations into poison mushrooms. If you want to do this, buy some new mushroom decorations or wrap them cling film in clingfilm so yuo can remove the decorations after the fact. Mix glue with green food dye and drip it lightly on the sides of the mushroom so that it drips off. Then, to really sell the decoration, buy some mini skulls and place them underneath the mushrooms to replicate little fairy skeletons.
