I adore Halloween, it’s such a cosy time and dressing up in cute costumes is so, so fun. However, choosing a costume can be difficult, especially if you want to keep to a certain theme, like the cottagecore aesthetic. If you want to join the fun but aren’t too sure what to wear this page is full of fun ideas to try help you find the perfect cottagecore Halloween costumes.

1. Stardew Valley Farmer

This costume is super simple, but still unique enough to be an amazing costume. Since the farmer is completely customisable, you won’t need to change your hair and only need to make sure you’re wearing something farmer-esque like a pair overalls. To make the character clear, you can pair the outfit with a hat (like the silly Viking hat or cutesy flower crown). To complete the outfit be sure to be holding a small, fake bouquet or wearing a mermaid pendant.

For the fake bouquet, you could buy a white set like this and paint it purple, blue, and orange to match the Stardew bouquet. For the pendant, try to find a coiled shell necklace and paint it blue.

2. Strawberry Shortcake and Friends

This adorable vintage children’s show is the perfect inspiration for a cutesy cottagecore costume. It’s an easily made outfit which incorporates hints of fruit into the design and uses simple clothing elements. Also, the plethora of characters in the show means you can choose one which has similar features, like hair colour, to yourself to avoid having to wear a wig. This is also a good idea for group costumes, with each of you going as a different character.

For Strawberry shortcake, wear a red, midi dress with puff sleeves and pair it with a frilly apron. Then, you cant paint or sew the patchwork designs into the apron. Pair this with green stripy tights and brown loafers and you’ve made the perfect Strawberry Shortcake costume.

3. Flower Fairy

Fairies are a very common costume for Halloween, but you can add a bit more whimsy to yours by basing it off of Cicely Mary Barker’s flower fairies poems. These illustrations are gorgeously quaint and often see fairies fashioned in clothes made of flowers. I encourage you to look at the website to find which fairy best suits you.

Most of the fairies wear dresses which you can replicate, but their most notable feature is their butterfly wings. It may be easier to make the wings yourself by painting the design onto a piece of cardboard and hot gluing the wings to your dress (or to elastic staps if you want to wear the dress again). You should pair this with a giant flower prop to complete the look, and you can paint the flower to match whichever fairy you choose.

Flower fairies make for the perfect cottagecore Halloween costumes.

4. Kiki from ‘Kiki’s Delivery Service’

What is more cottagecore than a young witch living above a bakery, running deliveries for the towns people and learning to live in her new, seaside home? Kiki is the perfect Ghibli coastal cottagecore character and her iconic design is so simple that you won’t need much preparation for your costume. Simply find a navy dress like this and pair it with some red ballet flats, a large red bow and an orange satchel bag for the perfect cottagecore costume.

Sadly, this costume is a bit more restrictive than the others as Kiki’s short and dark hair is key to her look, but if you really want to try this outfit then a wig is always a good option.

5. Toriel from Undertale

A bit of an older suggestion, but this tender, motherly character makes one of the best cottagecore Halloween costumes. From baking in her cosy home to tending to the flowers, her soft demeaner and aesthetic are perfect for a cottagecore Halloween costume. You could even make this a couples costume with her ex-husband Asgore.

Her costume is quite simple, you only need a batwing sleeved, white dress with a matching purple apron. You can then paint the insignia onto the apron and add a horn headband for the final touches. For painting the insignia, I would recommend fabric paint to make sure the colours are vibrant and the design stays on. These linked Mont Marte Fabric paints are cheap yet trustworthy, perfect to use for all your costumes. You can carry a cinnamon-butterscotch pie as an extra accessory and to add to the cute cottagecore vibe of the outfit.

A Toriel costume is such a good example for cottagecore Halloween costumes, her character is so cosy and cute

6. San from ‘Princess Mononoke’

Another Ghibli suggestion, this costume is a perfect nod to the more whimsical and wilder side of the cottagecore aesthetic. Tree spirits, animal gods, enchanted forests; this movie is the perfect aesthetically cottagecore movie. Furthermore, the message of moderation and learning to live alongside nature rather than in spite of it is paramount to cottagecore values, making this one of my favourite cottagecore costume ideas.

For San, wear a spaghetti strap black dress with a white tank top. Then, cut the side of the tank top on each side light at the armpits. Then take a square of faux fur and tie it together around your neck with a fake teeth necklace. After this, all that’s left is to add the makeup and your costume is complete.

7. The March sisters

Another group option is the sisters which star in Louisa May Alcott’s ‘Little Women’. This costume is slightly more difficult to pull off due to the sisters costumes being based in the styles of the time but I believe that a few details can be added to make the costume more obvious. To mix between simplicity and accuracy you can use a smock dress but to really create the costume, pair this with a wicker hat or flower crown, a wicker basket, along with an element of whichever sister you are dressed as. I would also recommend this as a group costume as being together will make the characters all the more obvious.

Meg can add some rolls of fabric into her basket and Jo can hold a journal. On the other hand, Amy can carry a paint brush and pallet and Beth can have some sheet music kept in her basket for extra detail.

A cute Victorian style outfit paired with a hat and wicker basket. Good inspiration for a cottage core costume.

8. Alice in Wonderland

Alice, whilst quite common, can be a cottagecore costume. The world of wonderland is perfectly quaint and strange, making it the perfect mix of cottagecore and Halloween. You can even make the costume unique by basing it off of the beginning of the movie, pairing the outfit with a white daisy flower crown and a teddy cat.

Alice’s costume is simple, pair a blue dress with an apron, white tights, and Mary-Janes. You can also add a black headband for added details.

9. Sleeping Beauty

Lots of Disney princesses are very cottagecore, but briar rose definitely falls high on that list. The mix between the princess aesthetic and the cottage in the woods create the perfect dreamy cottagecore vibe. This costume can be done multiple ways but I’d recommend her briar rose look for the ultimate cottagecore vibe.

Simply pair a white blouse with a long cream skirt and black corset. For the smaller details, you could add some small black heels, a black headband and a purple scarf.

10. Merida from ‘Brave’

Whilst Briar Rose encapsulates the cosy, soft cottagecore style, Merida embraces the dark, wilder side of the aesthetic. Ancient folklore, magic spells, and horseback riding through the forest? Merida’s aesthetic perfectly captures the more whimsical and natural elements of cottagecore which I simply adore.

For her outfit, you need those wild red curls, be they natural or a wig. It’s simply a key factor of her costuming. You can then pari this with a dark blue long sleeved dress and a loose, thick leather belt. The dress linked is the perfect style; its off the shoulder cut and bat-wing sleeves make it feel perfectly medieval and fit Merida’s costume brilliantly. Also, you could use some gold fabric paint to draw the designs at the bottom of her dress, as a unique added touch

All that’s left is a bow and you’re set! The perfect darker cottagecore Halloween costume!

11. Barbie from ‘Barbie and The Diamond Castle’

With Barbie being such a popular costume for 2023, a cute cottagecore spin to this costume would be to base it on an older barbie movie. The Diamon Castle is the most cottagecore of all the Barbie films, following two best friends who spend their time selling flowers and eating jam and bread. Mixing in the magical elements and crystal necklaces, these girls are the perfect cottagecore costume.

This costume is quite easy to make. For barbie, pair a pink puff sleeved maxi dress with a purple corset. Alternatively, Teresa uses the same items but in purple for the dress and blue for the corset. Pair both of these with some wicker baskets and the iconic crystal necklace and you’re set!
